also, why wasn't he in many of the publicity photo shots with the first Ghostbusters.

That's actually a good question. If you look at his website, you will see that he has played a number of roles starting with Leadbelly in 1976, a total of 22 movies before his role in Ghostbusters in 1984. The one movie that stands out in that list is "Roots" which was a blockbuster; however, he did not have a major role, which may be the reason his role was small in Ghostbusters. Let's not assume they needed a "token" to fight slime.

He is quite talented, played a huge role in "Congo" as Captain Munro in which he vocalized a beautiful British accent. In 1992, he showed his talent even more so playing a half wit in "The Hand that Rocks the Cradle." I think he needs more exposure with films that highlight his versatility as an actor.

Despite the caliber of acting that Ernie brings, his role still smacked of tokenism.

[I am now going to engage in a little role-playing to emphasis the previous statement]

"Well, this movie is looking rather...uh...white. Perhaps we need someone of...uh...hue...to balance it off. Nothing dramatic, just a few lines here and there."

[The previous statement was inserted to show a kind of lurking prejudice that many believe still exists in Hollywood, but in no way is to be construed as an insult, epithet or slur on any one]
