If you use the crossover cable, you would need to configure the ip address on both computers through the TCP/IP tab in LAN connections. Both computers would need to be on the same gateway and same ip address except for the last ip number.

Another way is to use the wizard in connections, there is an option to do it through a serial cable, which you would have to buy.

Also, there is a program that will allow you to connect computer using a USB cable, but you need to install software, maybe you can find a free one. on downloads.com

I bet you can do it by buying a USB hub, I've never looked into that way.

In my opinion..the faster and the easiest way to connect two computers without a rounter is by using the USB cables

The cable is commonly called Bridge Cable..It has a chip between the connectors..

Yep... in basic terms use a crossover cable. they are pretty designed for computer to computer connection. yet do no longer overlook that you'll want 2 ethernet playing cards in the computer it truly is quickly suitable to the internet and that sharing information superhighway connections over a crossover cable is in a number of of situations extra difficulty than it is definitely worth.

You did not say whether or not they have network connectors or cards, or whether you needed internet.

two computers, in same area, can be connected using serial or parallel ports. Later windows versions from 95 on permit this type of connection, AND have the necessary software.

two computers, across the country, can be connected using modems and the telephone lines, or with radio links (if properly licensed). (This was used BEFORE the internet!!)

I agree with the crossover cable, but... that will take your NIC slot on both PC's, making broadband internet connection impossible for either one.
If you want internet too, you'll have to use a router or a very smart switch and hard-coded IP addressses for the PC.
