I am trying to decide between getting a Rabbit or a Chinchilla. I live in a two bedroom apartment and will devote the same time and energy to both.

Why rabbits or chinchillas---
Dogs - No; live in apartment and don't have patience for walking in the cold or heat.
Cats - No; love them but my boyfriend is allergic to them
Guinea Pigs - No; I am allergic to them.
Ferrets - No; worried about smell and I don't think I will be able to clean the cage daily.
Any opinions?

I had rabbits. You will need to change their litter/bedding every day or it will stink. Rabbit piss will smell like ammonia. I trained my to use a litter box when he was out of his cage. It was pretty cool. Never had a chinchilla, so I can't help you out there.

Rabbits and chinchillas are both great pets. Rabbits can be very mellow and litter trained. They do smell a little but only if you don't clean up after them regularly. Chins are not always as cuddly and don't smell unless you let the cage go for weeks. The dust that chins use can make a mess if you let them free dust. Both need to be supervised when outside the cage because they can chew on everything, wires, furniture, paper, you name it.
Rabbits dont' live as long as chinchilla's so that is something you need to take into consideration, how long do want to take care of this animal.

Consider adopting.. there are always rabbits and chinchillas that need good homes.

You should get another type of pet that does not have fur, because to some people rabbits cause allergies and so do chinchillas. If you are allergic to guinea pigs, you may be allergic to rabbits and/or chinchillas too. Their fur is similar to the guinea pigs fur. Maybe you should try another pet, like a baby turtle or some fish. They are cute and don't have fur.

Chinchillas are not cuddly. There are exceptions of course, but for the most part, they don't like to be handled. They like to be let out of the cage to run around, which is really funny, and they will take treats from you, but they are more of a "look only" pet, like a fish tank.
Rabbits are a better choice. They can be tamed down and trained to use a litter box. You have to watch closely for chewing, and provide lots of alternative chewing options, but they learn that too, and become nice pets. Have it spayed or neutered though. Sexually mature rabbits get territorial and cranky. Consider a rescue bunny. There are lots out there looking for a good home.
Believe it or not, rats make wonderful pets. Look into them as an option, I think you will like them.

i've had three rabbits throughout the years and my male was the best pet (after i got him fixed). they're not that hard to take care of. the female i have now uses the litterbox all the time. she has bitten me once so i am careful when i reach in to give her food. i think she is territorial. her and my 3 cats get along, it's cute to see them chase each other. as for chinchillas, they are more expensive initially and you have to do the dust bath thing. even though chinchillas are softer, it think rabbits are cuter.

In my experience, rabbits are a little easier to train. They can even be litter trained so they don't have to stay in the cage all the time. Chinchillas generally don't litter train well (although you can usually train them to go in a pan in their cages). They are also a little more skiddish and require more upkeep. They need dust baths on a regular basis and have more extensive dietary requirements.

Here's a website on chinchillas: http://www.chinguide.co.uk/so_you_like_chins.htm

Whichever you choose, consider adopting one from your local human society. Many people forget that there are all kinds of pets available for adoption there, not just dogs and cats. Also try www.petfinder.com for adoptable pets.

Good luck with your new pet!

Rabbits are more social than chinchillas. Both will require about the same amount of care. I used to have a litter-box trained rabbit that played with my cats. It was pretty comical!!

rabbit you can litter train them but make sure you get a male. females can get mean when they are sexually mature, and you can't get them fixed because they usually die from the surger. chinchillas are cute but they are not easy to take care of, and you can't bathe them you have to put dust for them to bathe in.

I would take some fishes. Chinchillas look really nasty and rabbits are ugly to me. Goldfishes best option for me.
