He has to take the door panel off, which is going to be time consuming, but he is a friend of a friend, and isn't going to charge me. But I feel awkward letting him do it for free.

Typical amount of time to replace a door actuator is approximately 1/2hr - 1hr (depending on experience).
Typical labor charges are about $70/hr.

You can decide what is fair for him, but if he was working in a shop, the shop would charge you a labor cost between $35-$70 plus the cost of the part.

Rather than give money unless he's short himself and your not and you can afford to give him then figure out he worked say 6 hours then give 40 to 60 dollars or you can give him a home cook meal with a few beers. I'm sure he'll be more happy leaving with a full stomach than a pocket of cash he may not need and still go to a restaurant to eat especially if he's single. Make sure he doesn't drive feeling good you don't want to be responsible for an accident.
