Yesterday, my 6.5 mos daughter started licking her chin, she looks really funny, but is already starting to get a rash from her saliva.
She's already got her bottom teeth and the top ones are not through the gum yet, but they're about to.
I told my mother-in-law and she told me with my neice (whom she has raised) that the dr said to put carmex on the rash.
I just wanted to share this bit of knowledge with any other new parents and see if ya'll had any other suggestions

I assume that the dr told her to use carmex because the same bacteria in your mouth that causes the reaction on the skin, is what causes cold sores. I plan on trying this...you can think of me as a bad mom if you like, but I'm not poisioning my daughter.

And, if I had a rash on my chin from licking it, I wouldn't mind trying out the carmex.

Lansinoh (what breastfeeding moms put on their nipples) will also help with that rawness/rash on her face from the drooling.

Hyland's Teething Tablets are the best - far better than Orajel or the numbing stuff.

cold hard stalks of celery to chew on
put a metal spoon in the freezer and give it to baby to chew on
ice cube or "boob cube" in a Baby Safe Feeder
ice cube tied up in a baby sock
frozen wet washcloth

I am shocked that a docter told your mother-in-law to put carmax on a facial rash! First of all, carmax is for the lips and it is medicated and it is sure to burn or irritate the area. That might not be such a good idea. Try and get your child a teething toy to help soothe her gums to draw her attention away from licking her chin. I have found that Baby Oragel works great! Now they have the kind that is built inside a q-tip and you pop the tab of one end and the medicine comes out the other end! You don't have to worry about bacteria from your hands and putting your finger inside a gnawing babe! I wish you luck..... But, I would scratch out the carmax idea completely! Would you like to put carmax on a rash of yours? Okay....Best wishes my dear!

Just try to keep the area as dry as possible and use gental soap to clean the area. if you baby is able to "chew" I like to give my kids the frozen mini pancakes (still frozen) it really helps with the soreness.

LET HER CHEW ON FROZEN WAFFLES. THEY'LL SOOTH HER GUMS AND THEY HAVE BUILT IN DROOL CUPS!! OR YOU CAN BUY TEETHING RINGS ANY WHERE AND STICK THEM IN THE FREEZER. THAT WILL HELP WITH THE SPIT.
