I'm reading a book on ancient Egypt and Greece right now...
It says a good estimate during the Fourth Dynasty (around 2,500 BC) was about 2 million. That's based on writings found detailing grain production and storage, trading records, and a few other sources.

Mainly consisted of slaves. Their hard work helped us to be some kind of immortal. Building pyramids is still an expensive project :-)))
