Is wireless broadband available for desltops?

Question

I see tv ads for verison broadband for laptops with PC cards. I assume they get access through a satellite. Does any company offer it for desktops. I'm in an isolated area where I can't get cable or even a phone line.

I've looked at Sprint and Verizons websites but can't find anything.

The broadband access cards get their signal from cell towers, which is how Verizon, Sprint, etc offer the service.

You can get satellite internet through DirecTV, Dish Network, and others, but I hear it's very expensive.

To answer your question, I don't know of any desktops that come with that type of card slot, but I would imagine that if you had someone custom build a machine for you, they might be able to rig one up.

You have to get an adapter to let you use the verizon wirless card on your desktop,.
But YES is the answer your looking for.

We are currently using Hughesnet satellite
for internet (I live in the boonies)
it's (OK) but certainly is not comparable to cable.
Downloads are pretty good but surfing the net is
only about 1 1/2 times faster than a good dialup connection, all for $60 a month plus the $700.

Yes, just install a wireless card in the pci slot on the back of your computer. Verizon offers these cards for about 100 bucks plus service, which my friend uses for around 60 bucks a month. Download speeds will depend on how far/unobscured you are from the nearest cell tower, just like a cell phone. Good Luck :-)

I live in a small town but there is a local wireless company. The signal is beamed from a radio wave to a tower similar to a cell phone. They put a antenna on your roof to receive the signal They use a cat 5 wire with a RJ13 connector to your PC. Look in the yellow pages. There could be a small outfit doing it.
