You can perform a magic trick or have any number of cute little games for the Trick or Treaters, but you really should have candy on hand, because it's usually traditional to knock on a door and get a piece of candy.
My Mother used to to have a cute game that she made up where she had a drawn on the wall (this is when people allowed kids to come into their houses for Halloween) with erasable marker, a chart of heights - if you stood say 3 feet tall, you would receive a Hershey Bar. If you were taller (at say 4 feet tal), you would receive a Baby Ruth bar, etc. The kids used to love it because from one year to the next, the younger kids would grow a bit taller and then they would get the next size up's candy bar. The game was a real hit.
Have a lovely rest of the day.

I take exception to some of the answers you've received that the kids are out for candy and candy alone. When I was a kid (late 60's), one of our neighbors regularly did magic tricks or some such thing. I loved it, always looked forward to going to that house, never heard any other kids complain and it made that stop memorable. Here I am, so many years later, and I still remember that house.
Also, a few years ago, I decided that the kids in my neighborhood could do with one less candy and so I now give out small novelty gifts. They seem to like it just fine.

The kids only want candy. If you don't have any candy keep your lights off till the trick or treat time is over.

Only if that magic trick consists of pulling a candy bar out of thin air. Little kids can be pretty merciless when it comes to their sweets...

The term "trick or treat" is for the children to say. If you don't give them a treat, they will do a trick ON you.

Your picture is disgraceful. Go back to the swamp buddy. People like you are destroying the love and goodness in our country. And bringing down the intelligent level in our country. As for the reference to magic and walking on water, copycat...Rush said it first!!! Ok mobster. Hope you get cited for the picture!!!

i personally think that's a terrific idea! So unique. Though i can't guarantee that you won't get some bad reviews by candy seeking little rug rats.
