I know scented products are banned from some public places. But there are many other places where a few people seem to drench themselves in scent. Many of these scents make me choke.

How do you convince a co-worker or a neighbor, for example, that this is a real problem, when you have already asked to them not to wear perfume around you, and they don't take it seriously? They act as though I'm the one who is being difficult. Maybe I am being difficult? What do you think? What can I do, if it's not possible to avoid being around them?

I put this in the family category because I think it's similar to negotiating in a relationship, and I know there is lots of wisdom here, judging from the answers I've seen.

Kat, others have noticed it, too. I'm a non-smoker.

First of all the man that said that having allergies is a defect is just rude. People are not going to suffer if they can't wear perfume or cologne....and women are not the only ones guilty of wearing too much. Men do it too. I too suffer from allergies to perfume, cologne, air fresheners and the reaction to those can be unbearable. I start sneezing and my eyes start watering and itching...it's very similar to having a head cold. I have a woman in my office that wears perfume so strong that you can smell it 3 doors down from her office. I have yet to figure out a way to let an acquaintance know that it is a problem for me....a close friend I have no trouble telling. I do like the idea about an interoffice memo.....people that don't have allergies do not understand how uncomfortable an allergic reaction can be. Unfortunately I find that I sometimes just have to leave the environment. You might want to make sure that person sees how severely their perfume affects you and if they ask you what is wrong just let them know that you are allergic to their perfume. Sometimes people don't understand until they see the reaction first hand.

Do other people think this person wears too much, or is it just you? If you nicely ask someone not to wear perfume because of your allergies then that's really all you can do. I once worked with a girl who made a big deal about no one wearing any perfume or cologne at work. We didn't really take her seriously because she smoked like 2 packs of cigarettes a day and stunk like an ash tray. Most of the people I know that wear too much perfume are smokers who are trying to cover the smell.

there is a such thing as a perfume allergy. i myself have actually had an asthma attack because when i was in school our bus driver wore too much perfume. i'm a smoker too (i know i shouldn't) so smoking doesn't mean she's lying. my mom actually gets severe migraines from perfume. you may not like her but perfume allergies exist and i think it's pretty crappy to wear it around her when she could have a legitimate allergy.

I've heard that if a person uses the same scent, then later on they dont smell the scent as they did before...so they put on more and more and more until they can get a smell. In their minds it's just a touch of scent, but to use it ...-dang....ease up on the purfume. Suggust a new scent that is close to what they wear, but a slight different...to introduce there scents to something new. Then it wont be as strong. That way it gets them to ease up and then if they go back to their oringal, they will start to smell their old scents and put on less.

Complain to the office manager, suggest that he/she send a memo telling employees to not wear fragences in the office, due to allergic reactions/sensitivity to fragences.

Good luck, unfortunately most women don't realize, perfume is not appropiate in an office environment. A memo solved the problem in the office where I worked.

The reason is now, what it's always been. They probably didn't shower and seek to cover it up like the french. Tell them that they f*cking stink and to go take a shower. Be prepared for them to get upset, but if they really like you, they'll do it. If not, you're better without them.

Most people think that they couldn't possibly stink. Or maybe they didn't bathe and they need to cover their BO up.
