feel that they need to look masculine? Why do you always see one lesbian that looks like a bloke and the other is really feminine? Surely that defeats the whole object of being a lesbian?

ok, so not all lesbians do, but all the ones i've seen do.
My cousin was stunning, long dark hair, very pretty, then she came out and now she's chopped her hair off, wears workmans boots and walks like a geezer.....
Why?

Ok, well...I'm a lesbian, however, I can only speak for myself & experience...Not all lesbians are Butch, not all are Femme. I'm Androgynous myself, which is basically a mixture of the 2....

Ok, lemme try to explain this, although in my opinion, no one will truly understand unless they're gay/les...But we basically dress how we feel...If you feel all girly, then you dress like a girl...If you feel boyish you dress boyish, etc....I mean it's actually pretty simple...It doesn't defeat the whole object of being a lesbian at all...'Cause rather we're Butch, Femme, or Androgynous, we're still all WOMEN....I dress in men's clothes, have short hair, etc...but I love to wear make-up & some of my ways are kinda Femme too...That just makes me who I am....It's not about a 'need' to look a certain way, you dress/act the way you feel inside...It also doesn't mean that lesbians want to be men. I know I surely don't, dressing or acting boyish doesn't imply that either....I used to have long hair too before I came 'out', course I was out by the time I was 18...but...I chopped all my hair off, 'cause it just wasn't me, & I wanted to finally express on the outside what I felt on the inside....What it all boils down to is, you dress how you feel....

Sweety if you don't mind me calling you that it's an inner acceptance thing. Lesbians portray a variety of looks and styles. Those lesbians who do dress so called: manly or like boys do it out of comfort. Changing ones outter appearance is a personal choice. Maybe your cousin is an agressive lesbian and decided to match her inside with the outside. No it isn't defeating the purpose. A woman is a woman no matter how she dresses, looks, acts, says, etc. There is no changing that. When the clothes come off she's a female through and through. Appearance is outward. Attraction to a woman is simply the fact of she's a woman.

I personally have asked some STUDS ( that's what they are called in the mid west) why do they dress like that. The answer is always the same Its more comfortable.Ladies be honest when are u most comfortable when u are in some sweats and a t -shirt.
Not all women feel comfortable in thongs and skirts.I for one am very feminine and I prefer pants majority of the time with a nice shirt and some boots or pumps and I am very male minded. What u wear doesn't define your character nor does it calculate ur femininity or masculinity

Carla G wants a butch woman to answer this one...
OK, here it goes...
I wear my hair short because it's much easier to take care of. I prefer to wear means clothing (jeans, T-shirts, etc.) because they are less expensive and last longer, and also men's shoes fit better. Women's shoes are to narrow, and too expensive, and fall apart. Plus the work I do requires steel too boots ( I'm in butch heaven!!!). I grew up playing sports with the boys, so I learned at a young age to be tough, at least on the football & baseball field. I'd get under the hood with my dad when he was working on his car, and I'm still not afraid to get greasy! I can work on my own car. I learned to fix things myself so I wouldn't have to depend on someone else to do repairs around the house. I happen to be with a femme who wears her hair short also. She's into nail polish ( I do her nails!) and dressing up and all that other femme stuff. But being lesbian isn't about how you look , it's about how you feel inside, and being attracted to and having connections with other women.

Why do you feel the need to stereotype or to even question?

I'm a very feminine lesbian, but my partner is a soft "butch." You'll never catch her in a dress or skirt, she'd rather wear t-shirts and jeans if possible everyday. It's what she's comfortable in.
I don't question that, it's her I love, not her wardrobe.

Obviously since you're straight you can't see past your gender stereotypes. Fine, but don't lay it on us that we're "defeating the whole object of being a lesbian."
We're still women who love women.
Not women who love women ONLY if they look like the stereotypical "Harriette Nelson" or "Angelina Jolie."
It's what's inside, the heart, the mind the person.

Sexuality has no dress code, it has absolutely nothing do with what you look like or dress like, what really matters it is what is going on "Within the Skin"

You can be drop dead gorgeous and be a total shite to your friends and family and you can look like Wayne Rooney in a bra and knickers and be a loving, caring, understanding human being

If I had the choice and I have lady friends who prefer other ladies to men and I am blessed to know them

With all the real problems in the world like famine, poverty, strife, Aids, genocide and war, the LAST thing I need to lose any sleep over is some poor wee lassie who wants to wear dungarees and boots

C'mon the lassies

A woman is still a woman, whether she's masculine or not, even some straight women look masculine, so I don't think that "defeats the purpose of being a lesbian" at all. Lesbians are attracted to women, it's a simple concept.

Different people are attracted to different traits. Some lesbians like a more masculine looking woman and others a more feminine looking woman and still others want one that looks like a 12 yr. old boy. You can't even begin to generalize something like that. Certainly not all lesbians want to look masculine.

The good thing is that they can be as they feel and are nit restricted by the role-playing. they have the choice. Maybe you only recognise the Butch ones, while the feminine blend in. Its the same with the boys.
I think its great, you get what you see, and not some disguised Barbie-dolls
