As soon as they can scratch themselves. There is no "too early" age for this. Best wishes!

When they are newborn their fingernails are usually still attached to their fingers. When they start to peel up a bit, you can usually just bite or tear them off. You can start cutting them with little clippers or scissors whenever you want, but wait until the baby is asleep before you try that. It's much easier to do while they are sleeping and that way you won't end up cutting their little fingertips. Even when their fingernails are trimmed they will still scratch themselves some. Just try to keep on top of it because their fingernails grow so fast.

My son's fingernails were long so I had to cut them right after his birth. I'd suggest cutting them or filing them when they need to be cut, ie he starts scratching his face. If you don't cut them, you have to keep the baby in mittens or gowns that have hand coverings to stop the scratching.

My oldest has a scar on her cheek she gave herself when she was about thirty seconds old from her nails (more like talons at the time...lol) scratching her little face. My pediatrician recommended using an emery board until she was about 6 wks. old. New newborns nails are still connected to the skin of their fingers plus the nail is so soft it will not cut- only bend- with clippers or scissors. File away, Mom!

Cut them when they need to be cut. Theres no medical reason to leave them long, and yes, they will scratch themselves. I suggest using scissors vs using clippers. I've been cutting my sons fingernails and toe nails since week 1.

Hello,
My hubby began trimming our twins daughters fingernails at 4 weeks. If you start now, your baby is less likely to scratch his or her face. Because a babies fingernails are so thin, you can probably just tear them off to.
Hope this helps you... :-)

I cut my baby's nail as soon as they got hard(he was about 2 and a half weeks). He grabs his face soooooo much that I had no choice. As long as you don't cut his finger I think it's perfectly fine.Be sure to use a baby nail clipper and the best time to do it is when they are sleeping.

Why wait? Cut them so the baby can't scratch himself! Those little mittens don't stay on long anyway.

You can cut them as soon as it is needed, I had a hard time holding on to the infant nail cutter so I just used the regular one and made sure I was real careful, also put long socks on their hands, they work much beter than the mittens.

Some grow really fast. If you didn't want to cut them right away, they make little mittens for them to wear so they don't scratch themselves.
