Very quick crossing south ... very long coming back to the states

If you son is a minor you need authorization from the other parent to allow him to enter Mexico with you - notarized

if yuo are just going to TJ, don't take a car. more of a hassle than it's worth.

you can take bus, trolley or presumably car to San Ysidro, and cross on foot (some Greyhound buses go right to TJ). Taxis are cheap enough from there; it's not a bad walk, either - bear left through the 70s-looking plaza, cross the footbridge and you're downtown, right by Revolucion, the main drag.

it takes no time at all to enter; there are generally some amount of lines coming back (depending on times; prime return-home times are busier than, say, mornings). car crossings take for-ev-er.

I've never brought a kid along; I'm guessing a birth certificate and photo ID should be good (calling the Dept of State would be the best info). Ditto for you. Passports of course are best, but not necessary yet. For cars, you need extra insurance, and you may have to leave a deposit or some assurances that you're not gonig to sell your car in Mexico.

If you're driving more than roughly an hour into Mexico, you'll need tourist cards as well. you should be able to get these at the border.
