Soot and tar are carried up into the chimney by the smoke and rising hot air. The further from thefire, the cooler they become, and become attached to the sides of the chimney wall itself. Creosite is a dangerous deposit which can cause "flue" fires.

A good reputable chimney sweep can take care of this in one visit.
