Who first found Australia (but not the Aboriginals)?

At the risk of offending some folks, the dregs of England's society. Australia was orginally a penal colony for those that England didn't want hanging around their own shores.

I’m English & naturally would have said Captain James Cook who claimed Australia in 1770 ...

but I believe it was actually a Dutchman Willem Janszoon who first discovered Australia in 1606.
