I had a A/C tech come out. He checked the freon and the contactors. He said it is NOT the freon, and the contactors are fine. He doesn't know what is causing it and says he can't tell unless it is frozen at the time he sees it. Is this accurate? What else could it be? I am frustrated that I paid for a service call but still don't have an answer to my problem! It is not frozen now but I am assuming it will happen again.

There are several possibilities that would cause your evaporator to freeze up.
A. an airflow restriction; ie: dirty filter
B. An overcharged system; too much refrigerant
C. dirty evaporator
D. If your metering device is a TXV it may have stuck open.

A "Technician" would have been able to diagnose your problem whether or not it was frozen at the time, if he knew how to troubleshoot. This "tech" is a "parts changer". He will start to replace parts until he gets it right and you pay the price.
DO NOT call this company again. Go to a company who is licensed and has a good word of mouth reputation.
P.S. IT will freeze again.

Sometimes a unit will freeze up when you don't change the filter and when you discover that it's not cooling the first thing you do is change the filter and the problem is corrected.
If by chance you are one of the people that thinks you can run the unit for a while without the filter this could cause the same problem. Over a period of time the coil upstairs will clog with dirt, hair, animal fur etc. it will cause the coil to ice over. Now when the compressor shuts off and the pressure switches don't let it come back on and the fan still blowing the ice will melt and with the water washing off part of the debre the unit will resume. If this happened, you have possible escaped a bullet or it is a precursor to what you can expect in the future. This meaning that it may be a period of time when the cooling coil ( especially if it is a A frame coil that sits on top of the heater) will need to be replaced. ALWAYS CHANGE YOUR FILTER WHEN YOU CAN'T SEE LIGHT THROUGH IT OR EVERY TWO WEEKS
Good Luck

Had that trouble once after installing a new compressor. It turned out I had excessive moisture/humidity in the house. It resolved itself after I turned it off and let it thaw out. (And humidity had dropped)

Don't rush into expensive maintenance calls.

Jim B is right. Just let it thaw out and turn it on later. The thing was overworked and underpaid...

I agree with poster above.
However, other items to consider...........
TXV or expansion device failed, unit shorted and runs continuos, unit sized improperly, wrong orifice, etc.

Provide model # of condenser, evap, etc. and we will try to help
