I started to hear abt "democratic republic" after WWII, when the countries with "socialist" governments and under the URSS umbrella wanted to remark the difference fm the countries with "capitalist" governments.
More prominent in broke up countries like Korea, Vietnam, Germany and Congo itself , during the fifties and sixties.
Since Zaire disappeared and two new Congo countries arised, the Democratic Republic of Congo is back
But I don´t know what do they understand for democracy.
Regards fm Argentina and sorry for my english

Americans may sometimes use the word republic as in The Republic, meaning USA and the French often use the letters RF which means Republique Francaise [French Republic].

But yeah, many a country that has democratic in the title isnt.

Its there for effect. I suppose that they added it to gain an air of legitimacy when the county is talked about within it region.

But people on crack .....................will do crack-head things.
