I think it's because most of us whities don't really care what people call us. Not in Australia, anyway. Though if you dig deep enough, you'll find our desire not to be called racist has put white people at more of a disadvantage than just that. I'm all for equality, but I wonder at the wisdom of our govt. when pretty much any race but the majority gets hand-outs and low interest home loans while white people are paying top dollar for everything and getting deeper and deeper in debt/poverty. I'd like to be equal, too.

Ask a black person or an arab and find out. I know plenty of white people and race is never a conversation topic. Why do some have to make it an issue??? And don't use "those people" saying that to wrong person will your a** kicked. That's probably why because white people say stuff like "those people". Get some black friends.

I don't think "white" people have to be any more careful than anybody else -- they just have to show respect for everyone.
You need to remember, though, that for a very long time (many hundreds of years), "white" people enslaved and mistreated anyone who wasn't "white." Thought of them as inferior, less than human, wild savages. There's a lot of that still going on today, unfortunately. And even if there wasn't, the memory of how badly everyone else was treated by "whites" will be around a long time...so in effect, "whites" today are paying for the sins of their ancestors. And rightly so.
Just respect everyone and you'll never have to be "careful" about what you say, because hateful words won't be in your vocabulary.

Because for some reason everyone seems to think that white people are the only racist people in the world and now they have to be careful with anything they say about other people that aren't white becuase someone will probably think they're racist and give them some nasty look or something. It's ridiculous.

I hate to admit this, but there's some truth in what you're saying. There does seem to be a double standard in that area. . .the recent flap over the Pope's comments is a good example.
I don't see him issuing a fatwa against the Muslim leaders who are calling for his death.

Everyone should try to be careful not to offend anyone. We are each responsible for our actions and words, and we get karma for it. So if you offend someone then you will have to be offended by someone that is the law of nature.

Most black people are careful about how we talk about whites. It's just that sometimes you all really get on our nerves and we have to speak up in order to remain sane.

because if they are not, they are considered a racist or a biggot. unfortunately there is a stereotype that all while people "owned slaves" or are white supremicists. it's a form of reverse discrimination IMHO.
