Being informed is not a bad thing. All too often people go about their daily lives without knowing the goings on in the world. Heck I'd venture to say that 80% of us are not aware of who our city's Mayor or City Council Members are. During the birth of the nation, the only way for the colonists to stay up to date an in the loop was the press. That's one of the biggest reasons we've got the first amendment, providing freedom of speech, freedom of the press...
However (there had to be a caveat) there are too many political undertones in our media today. Remember the CBS/Dan Rather "investigation" on President Bush's military service? That was purely politically motivated. Sub standard information and sources, shoddy reporting and unfortunately it cost some very otherwise qualified people their careers. We've got both sides of the political spectrum in the media, don't get me wrong. There is more visible Liberal media, but Conservative media is taking ground, such as Fox News and the like.
Watching the news, reading the paper, surfing the web, whatever your mode of gathering the news, it's not a bad deal if you keep it in perspective. Don't let all the "bad" news rule you're day either, take in some positive information as well to balance.
And, it's doubtful that the 5 PM news is any different than the 6PM new, the 7PM news or the 11PM news...watching all of these can be a bit obsessive IMHO.

Watching the news has its pros and its cons.
It can inform you of what is going on around you and in places where you may never go. This is a good thing as it keeps people in touch with the world.
However it is also true that an impartial media company is very hard to come by. They show you the news of the world through their tinted specs and they also choose what to show you and what not to.
If you find yourself shaking your head it is because the media companies value ratings highly... and misery and violence sadly sells better than happiness and tranquility. It is all about the ratings.
It also comes down to who owns the particular media companies, the higher positions within those companies and the affiliations of the stations.
Is the news healthy? I'll just say that it tends to be a poisonous multi-vitamin. You may want to vary your news chanels, not only in stations but also in the nationality of your news servers. That should allow you to get a better idea of what is going on around you (though you may still need to watch some non-news to balance out the negativity that is churned out).
This applies to all mediums of news.

i tihnk that watching the news could be good in small portions, for example three times a week during the evening.
it is important to know what's happening in the world in order to understand more and know what to expect.
but for some poeple it's bad, it depends a bit on a person, some can become paraoid, which is not a good thing, or it can mess up they're brains...
so i wouldn't recommand watching the news everyday, coz mostly it's negative.
being aware is nothing bad, but being stressed because of it can effect life in a negative manner aswell.
so take it in in very small portions, not daily=]

I think so.. If you dont get a chance to read the newspaper at least 3 times a week, watching the news lets you know what is going on in this world.. CNN or MSN news is much better because it's not totally focused on local news.

It depends on the quality of the news. If you're watching the BBC or something else like that, I'd say keep up the good work. If you're watching CNN or Fox I suggest you quit while you still can.

I want to be able to make as informed decision as possible when I go to the polls so I stay abreast of the news. But I prefer to read the news on the net.

Just enough to be informed about events in the world. And be sure to listen skeptically.
