Nations refrain from using nuclear weapons against their adversaries for several reasons, one of which is the high loss of life that will occur in the civilian sector. Most governments are stymied from using their own nuclear arsenal because their citizens, having a conscious, insist that they show restraint. Moreover, the utilization of nuclear weapons against ones foes will ensure mutual destruction. For example if India launches its missiles against Pakistan, Pakistan will undoubtedly retaliate. If the United States employs its weaponry against a nation that Russia favors, then the US will be the recipient of a barrage of nuclear attacks coming from Russia. It’s the fear of reprisal that keeps most countries in check when contemplating using nuclear bombs as a preemptive measure.

Most have them or want them to let the world know that they have a deterrent against similar attacks. They know of the devestation, destructuction and deaths resulting from the Atomic Bomb. One cannot blame them.
However, it would be a very big mistake for the US to use the bomb again. It would create a ripple effect. The US would be the first one blamed, and there would be massive unthinking retaliation.
Sorry but I believe Japan is a very patient country also. And I know she signed an agreement to never create nuclear weapons. But she suffered an unimaginable disaster.
And no matter what one may think, I believe she believes just like the Jews have...
"Never Again"

Basically, the present countries that have nuclear weapon will not attack another country that has them also, is because the other country would retaliate.

Why they don't use them on countries that don't have nukes, is that the U.S. would not stand for it and would retaliate in some way.

The problem with allowing the Arab countries in The Middle East, or North Korea to have nukes is that they are ruled by unstable, power hungry dictators who might use them, and if not, can use them to black mail the U.S. and other peaceful countries.

Another problem is that the Muslim, Arab, terrorists are multi-national and the countries that support them deny that they support them. If Muslim, Arab, terrorists used them, who would we retaliate against? ( I say Muslim, Arab, terrorists because there are Christian Arabs that are a minority and as Christians, don't believe in terrorism.)

The international aspect of Muslim, Arab, terrorism, is only one of the reasons that we should do all we can to prevent Arab nations from getting nuclear weapons.

MAD Mutual assured destruction (why nuclear powers don't attack other nuclear powers) and a nuclear attack on a non-nuclear nation would almost certainly result in the elimination of the aggressor nation by the world's other nuclear powers.

Basically, use a of a nuke assures destruction of the country using it (excepting possibly the US and maybe Russia).

One word Japan....we see the devastation it can do to the Earth let alone the ppl. It takes close to 50 yrs for the radiation to dissipate and the effects on a genetic level are even worst!!!

We don't use nuclear weapons b/c NO ONE no matter how power hungry they will use it......instead use biological warfare. Effective but lease damaging.

sure. several nations have nukes. They dont use them for several reasons
they dont need to:
- because no one important enough threatens them, or
- they have no real enemies, or
- they have enough conventional forces to handle their problems

they cannot:
- because their enemies have more/better nukes
- the friends of their enemies have nukes, and these friends are reliable and trustworthy enough to believe that they will use them when they say so.

Which is why you should never ever elect anyone like Carter again. because he could not be trusted to stand by his country's allies. And that is why it is important to be _seen_ to stand by your allies- which today includes Iraq.

Otherwise the only hope for freedom is in the building of nukes- by Taiwan, Japan, Saudis, Omanis, Kazachs, Ethiopians...
