mark g gives a lot of numbers about how many people other countries have killed, but not so much about America. Over the last 200 years, America certainly did kill a hell of a lot of people. Native Americans are a part of this number. Low estimates put the number of them at contact at 10 million. Hell, Columbus encountered at least 250 thousand of them when he landed, and that was just an island. When our 200 year period begins, there were certainly many, many fewer. Disease has taken care of much of that in the previous 300 years.

Still, if we consider the amount of Native American remains just collecting dust in back rooms of museums (before 1990 and NAGPRA, that is), and don't even count those buried or interred elsewhere, we can easily put that total number at over a million. Almost certainly a lot more. You want to talk about history teachers not doing their jobs, try being an Archaeologist in this country. I wonder how many of these people realize that the number of Native Americans killed in declared warfare is larger than those killed in undeclared warfare.

The fact that we dropped the bomb on Japan in WWII to save American lives isn't the point of the question, mark g. The question is about straight numbers. Those get counted just like any other.

In the end, Russia probably beats us out pretty easily. Britain too. But people saying "America" as the answer shows not that they don't know American history, but that they actually know it pretty well. They just don't know international history as well, which makes America look bloodier than it would be by comparison.

Depends who you are, where do you come from. Probably Americans will never answer that this was USA, but someone else, like Russia. Those stuck in WW2 will say Germany or Japan. I think this question has to be looked over the fact that for last 200 years the west has dominated the rest of the world. Yet within the west who was the main power that controlled the world? And with control performed war missions? I'll let this one open, I don't want anyone to be angry at me. ;)

Thats impossible to say, but take into account this if you don't think it is the US. There are more people in USA prisons then there are in the military and everyday innocent people are killed by there own government who don't sit in prison. Does this include non declared war? Then again you also have to take in account how long a country has been a country or perhaps what kind of regime was controlling the country as well. You would have to have knowledge on every countrys population, death count and reason for death and i say impossible.

It is very possible you have a valid point here especially if you look back in our early years as we went to war with Natives among others. We basically have developed to where we are now by force. However, I wonder if we would be able to have this free flowing discussion if it hadn't been that way? We are a waring people. If you don't think so ask yourself why we spend so much of our country's budget on defense. But once again, I'm not sure I would want it any different. Just a thought.

Communism has killed far more people than the US, or any other Western power, over the last 200 years. One study estimates that between 40.472m and 259.432m people were killed by Communist regimes between 1900 and 1987 (source below). Stalin himself is thought to be responsible for 17m Soviets (excluding those killed in WW2), and the Chinese cultural revolution caused the death of 30 million people (source: the current Chinese government), although many died of hunger. By comparison, the Axis powers of WW2 lost around 10m people (most killed by the USSR) and there were a 'mere' 3m casualties for the Vietnam War.

Obviously people here want to bash the USA but are not intelligent enought to look in a history book. Nazi Germany killed 6 millions Jews alone, that does not count the poles, russians and other eastern Euorpean people killed in their extermination camps. It is estimated that over 10 million Russian civilians were killed in their war with Russia. Now add the millions of civilians killed in the war with Poland, France, Belgium, Briatian, Romania, Greese, Egypt, and the Chechs. Japan exterminated whole cities in China. Men, women and children. Millions of them. They also killed enslaved and relocated millions of Koreans How many German civilians were killed in that war, I'm not sure, but Stalin kept German prisoners in camps in Siberia till the 1950's, and millions of German civilians were killed. Most Germans tried to reach the American and Bristish lines at the end of WWII to surrender to them because of the treatment by the Russians. Even tho it is hard to blame Russians after what their people had been thru at the hands of the Germans.
Did everyone forget that France fought Vietnam for ten years before America did? Is anyone smart enough to figure out that the casualties if we would have invaded Japan would have been 100 times higher than they were with the A Bomb. The expected casualties of Japanese were thought by Japan to be in the area of 10 million. Thats their figures. Go look it up.
We won't count the 20 million Russians killed by Stalin since that was their own. If you want to blame America for the indians then look at France and British history. They didn't just wake up and call themselves French. How about British colonization of half the world by force of arms. How many people died during Napoleons wars? He lost half a million men in Russia that froze to death, plus killed close to a million Russian soldiers and civilians. Get a grip people learn somne history and stop your stupid American bashing when you have no knowledge of History at all. Great job our world history teachers have been doing.
Silver Rain your figures about the American civil War are correct as far as American casualties but not even close to the amount of people killed in WWI combined. And Amercia was the last country to get involved with WWI and WWII

you say declare or undeclared war then is a tie between USA and Germany.
USA killed and exterminate millions of native Americans in a undeclared war , also in the war against Mexico where America took most of the southern states California, Texas ,new Mexico big chunks of Nevada and Arizona. also in japan with the nuclear bombs drooped over two cities ,the korean war, vietnam war with over 3 million casualties civillians and military .and more recently in Iraq.
then Germany with Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party killed millions of people including Jews, polish, Russians, french etc
incinerating people alive and destroying countries.

so it is a tie between USA and Nazi Germany
people who died because of the Communism or hunger or government dictatorship doesn't count in this question.

I would have to say the United states. The civil war killed more people than the two world wars combined, and those were only American citizens. when you add it up, the US wins it hands down (sadly).
