If he's a close friend, it's natural for him to be protective of you. Especially if you've made bad choices with boyfriends in the past, he's probably just looking out for you. On the other hand he may have feelings for you himself but doesn't want to do anything about them, so seeing you with other guys makes him jealous.

This sounds like a guy you've known for a while...even tho you might just be friends...but feelings could have developed through the time you've gotten to kno him...
i think there's a huge chance that he might like you in a more than friend way...so if u dun want to be nething more with him, its best to let him kno early on rather than keepin it till the end..becoz that could ruin a friendship...happend to me before....i didnt wanna tell a guy i didn't like him fearing that i'll hurt him but in the end...i had to let him kno and by then it was too late...and i lost a great friend

Unfortunately, some guys are possessive of their female friends because they hope it will turn into something more by scaring off all the competition. I have a female friend who has a guy acting the same about her - she's thinking of telling him where to go if he can't be more 'friend' like and less 'boyfriend' like.

He probably likes you... and doesn't like the idea of you spending time with other guys. Doesn't matter if you're not his girl friend... that fact isn't seeming to change the way he feels at all. Maybe come out and talk to him about it.

Has it ever crossed your mind that this guy would like to be your boyfriend, even though you may not view him that way? It certainly goes a long way in explaining his actions whenever you show interest in another guy.
