A traditional English billion was a million millions therefore written as 1,000,000,000,000 however in recent years it has become common international practice to use the American billion which is a thousand million hence 1,000,000,000

A billion in number form is 1,000,000,000. A million is 1,000,000. There are three more zeros in a million than a billion. Take another pair of numbers, one with three more zeros. 2 and 2,000. 2,000 is 2 x 1,000 because it has three more zeros. Therefore, one billion is a thousand millions.
