"Emo" is short for emotional. It's a sort of cultural trend going on in todays youth (12-16 ish). I personally think it stems from adolescents and all the problems that go along with fitting in and growing up. They feel isolated so they try to relate to other people who are also isolated... other "emo"s.

An 'emo kid' is generally characterized with rebellious dark hair, (usually grown out long in front of the face), tight jeans, braclets, and an intense love for the band Bright Eyes, or any other depressing music.

This mini-culture really shouldn't be confused with the punk rock movement. Punk rockers want to take down authority, while Emo's would rather just sit at home with an acoustic guitar that they can barely play and write poetry.

The term emo has become a negative one and you would be hard pressed to find an kid willing to say they are "emo" they prefer alternative... or something along those lines.

EMO- "preppy-goth" or "skater-goth", usually

People who are "EMO" are rarely labeled such by choice. Any teen or preteen (and occasionally adults) who are seemingly sad and depressed, but are almost blatantly in a stage or simply trying to fit in, are labeled EMO. While there is an EMO movement, I have yet to find anyone who did it before it was "cool", and I live in a very large city. EMO is simply a reference to a state of angst. This is very popular amongst the 5th-9th graders in this area right now, though I am not sure why.

As far as I know, its emotional rock I believe.

Black hair with bangs swept over one eye, black eye liner on boys, and tears.

Think AFI.

Really awful, whiny "My girl left me, now I'm going to cry about it" music.

Boys with hair over their eyes, wearing eyeliner and girls pants.

Girls with chunky glasses and "ironic" t-shirts.

It's a dumb trend. Give me good old fashioned rock and roll any day.
