Friday the 13th of this month, my beautiful bunny met a boy. They did their thing and I was prepared for the fact that she may get pregnant.

Yesterday, being the 10th day after mating, I sat down with her and tried the palpitating method to determine if she is pregnant or not. I am not sure if I did it correctly but I could not feel any "marbles" or "grapes".

I went on to do a visual exam of her (which I do periodically to make sure everything is well with her) and checked her teeth, paws and finally her vagina.

I was shocked to find that her vagina seems to have turned into a penis!!! I do know what the difference looks like and her being a female has been confirmed to me by 2 different vets.

So, the big question is... could this simply be some swelling? Could this be caused by the fact that she is pregnant, even though I could not feel any "marbles" while palpatating?

She seems in great health otherwise and very much herself personality-wise.. Please HELP?!

um maybe you got the boy bunny and the girl bunny mixed up, and the girl bunny went home to the wrong person.. but if the vets say its a girl then i guess it is. you are probablly right.. it could be swelling. have another vet check her out and ask if anything is wrong, if she's pregnant or sick or what, and just get his oppinion.

Well, maybe the veterinarians were wrong about the sex of the rabbit. Normally you palpate at 14 days old. At 14 days old the babies should be about the size of a marble and feel round. You also have to make sure you press your hand up far enough to feel them. Palpating is not easy to do to say the least. To also answer your question, the veterinarians may have been looking for descended testicles to determine if the rabbit was a male or a female. Some male rabbits have trouble with their testicles descending. At rabbit shows if they aren't descended it can be a disqualification.

Swelling wouldn't make a rabbit vagina look like a rabbit penis. The website below shows good pictures of how to sex a rabbit.

You have to remember that many vets are not rabbit savvy. If you're still having trouble deciding have someone look at the rabbit that regularly shows rabbits. They should be able to tell the sex.

If you have never palpitated before this can be quite a challenge. I would wait a couple more days and then try again. One of the mistakes that people make when palpitating is they dont reach up into the area far enough, or they dont bring their finger and thumb close enough together.

I would recommend you check out the link for Debmark below, where you can see the difference between the buck and doe genital parts. She has some excellent pictures on there. Our general rule of thumb is hotdog is a boy and taco is a girl and when you look at the pictures you will understand that.

We also have an article on palpitating on our website that you may find helpful.

although I used to breed rabbits, I can honestly say I have never checked the vagina of a pregnant rabbit.
the gestation period is only four weeks, watch her to see if she starts to make a nest, offer her some fresh hay, and if she starts to make a nest, and then pull hair from her chest to line it, then congrats. she might build and rebuild again and again until she gets it the way she wants it.

also if she is, keep a very close eye on her when her time comes, I had a rabbit that with her first litter, she panicked and killed her babies, but rest assured most do not.
I even got to watch and "assist" in one delivery, that was cool.

Make sure she is warm and I know everything will be alright.

If you don't want to wait to see if she starts to make a nest, you could always take her to the vet. I never could feel the babies until the week before. And I delt with many many many preggo rabbits. Just never got the hang of it.

Bunnies do make great pets, and holland lops are an exceptionally candy breed! I do could desire to provide you with a warning and this is going with all bunny breeds, make certain you have frolicked with the bunny and please socialize at an early age! Doing so, they'll make very solid pets with a different character for each bunny!

Bunnies only take 30-32 days to have babies ! so don't fret... you will be able to tell by the 20th day,she will start to pull her hair out to make a nest, make sure you have a nesting box for her. the day she is ready to give birth she will not eat only drink alot! she will pant. Don't worry to much rabbits take care of everything themselves, they are so easy to tend to.
