Food stamps are a form of welfare, they are for those persons who are of lower income or on the poverty line. They are limits to what can be purchase with food stamps, but they are accepted by most grocery stores and even what are considered corner shops in some places. One thing to remember is that you do not get change back from a food stamp.

You have to qualify for assistance through Department of Children and Families. They base it on your income and living expenses. You get a card that looks no different than a credit card or ATM card. It only allows you to purchase food items on it at grocery stores. Automatically the computer system will pull out non food items and give you a balance of what is owed for you to pay for separately, if you have things like beer, toilet paper, pet food or hygiene items. You have to reapply for your food stamps every 6 months to a year, depending on where you live, and if your wages changed, the allowed amount on your food stamps could change.
It is a great program, for those that really need it and don't abuse it.

they get food stamps because either they don't make a lot of money or because they have no money at all...they get a card like a credit card and when they shop they just slide the card through the machine as if it were a debit or credit card and the money goes toward what you buy...basically department of economic security (DES) makes an account for you so that you can use this card but depending on your income or how many kids you have or whatever...they give each person a certain amount...some people also get cash assistance (CA) this is where they can use this same card to also withdraw a certain amount of cash from an ATM

Getting food stamps and other state help depends on your income and usually if you have children.
You go to your local welfare office, fill out a buch of paperwork, give them copies of your bills and other information.
If you meet the guidlines then you will be granted a certain amount of food stamps for a period of time. They can only be used for food items. No tobacco, alcohol, toliet paper, cups or anything else. Food only.
And you have to requalify like every 3 months or so.
You take the credit card like card to the store and swipe it thru the little machine the store has and it deducts whatever you just spent from the amount on the card.
Hope this helps

If you are below a certain income level you can apply for food stamps. They are accepted just like cash at grocery stores for the purchase of food items.
The hitch is that it is very hard to make a distinction between what is an actual food item and what is luxury "junk food". It is also surprisingly difficult to tell the difference between someone really in need of assistance and those who are in poverty "on paper" but in real life are doing just fine.
I remember as a child going to the grocery store with my mom and seeing her get upset over the fact that the grossly overweight woman in front of us in the checkout like had her basket loaded with ice cream, cookies, and potato chips and paid for the whole thing with food stamps and then walked out of the store and loaded it into her Cadillac (a luxury American car) while my family, supported by a hard working professional who was just starting out, was stretching our budget to pay for our basket full of the basics and driving home in our VW beetle.

So many people work so hard for there pay check but with the rent being so high they don't have enough money to buy food so they get food stamps. Some don't need it and some do.

At one point of my life, I was in need of assistance. In California you go to the Social Services office (welfare) and apply for the food stamps, cash aide and/or medical. If your income is low enough and you do not qualify for other programs or they do not pay enough out for the household size you have, you may qualify. When you qualify you get and EBT card and you use it like a credit card at the store to buy your groceries.
Hopefully, but not holding my breath, people are not using it as a way of life. It is supposed to be VERY temporary. Here in California you only get 5 years of assistance in your lifetime. It is to keep people from making it a life-long lifestyle.

People that qualify for them get them. You must show proof of income and expenses, etc. Then you will only get them if you are below a certain income level.
You usually get a credit type card now and you use it as such when checking out. The balance on the card will be applied towards your food purchases.
