I have a fish bowl with 4 small goldfish and a black butterfly koi! -- Are there any other types of fish that do not have to have a filter, like a large tank would?... And that would get along well with the goldfish and koi? .. .. Maybe a little crab or sucker-fish??

It's a huge bowl, made for fish. Its a 3 gallon decroative fish bowl. The fish are very small and the koi is not of the large variety. I've had these fish for almost a year and they have not grown. -Yes, they are messy, and yes, I probably do need a filter.

Oy... Let me give you a good link to read up on proper care for your fish, because I'm sorry to say it, you're not caring for them properly.

http://www.petlibrary.com/goldfish/fishcare.htm

You'll notice the site says never to use a bowl - read up on why. For the goldfish you currently have, you should be thinking about investing in at least a 75-gallon tank - most of them grow to be quite large, and there's no way you're able to combat the excessive ammonia levels in anything smaller. Koi need to be in ponds - unless you have a 250-gallon tank lying around, you're never going to be able to care for him properly.

NONE. It's cruel to keep fish in a bowl without a filter and heater. plus, for being only 3 gallons its already WAY overstocked. Look around at garage sales and the like and try to find an aqauraium for them. a 20 gallon would be big enough for your 4 goldfish, but the koi is going to outgrow that very quickly.

Please, don't be cruel to fish.

No fish can stay in a bowl. The betta desires 5 gallons and a filter out and heater. different fish want a minimum of 10 gallons. in case you opt for to homestead fish with bettas you like a minimum of 10 gallons.

Goldfish do not "need" a filter or a bubbler. they can get their oxygen from the surface, that is one way the differ from most fish. But if you don't have a filter you would have to change the water alot and that would cause too much stress on the fish.

you have too many fish in your bowl. a bowl is really only good for 1 betta fish. goldfish need room. 4 "common" golfish need at least a 20 gallon tank...and koi's grow to 32 inches or more. Koi's are pond fish, if you put on in a tank you'd need a very large tank. the rule of thumb is 1 inch of fish to 1 gallon of water...but goldfish need more room because they expell alot more waste.

goldfish are cold water fish, so a good tank mate is an apple snail. they are easy to care for and fun little guys to watch.

I'm not being mean, but fish bowls are cruel. Don't keep ANY fish in a bowl. They don't offer enough space and have little surface area which limits the fish' oxygen. Also, ALL fish need filters. It is an /essential/ if you want to keep fish properly. Goldfish are very messy fish and they NEED filtration.

Also, suckerfish and loaches are a bad bad idea. I had one kill a fish of mine once.

Sorry if I sounded mean, just trying to help. Good luck moving your fish to a filtered tank. ^^

Edit: You really think that 3 gallons is a "huge" ammount of space for fish?

well to tell you the truth goldfish most of the time do not live that long just in a bowl.. but some people can do it ..only thing would be a water frog most pet stors have them ..u can but a sucker-fish in there but there are 2 kinds only one can got with them .. but not a crab they need land and water and i would not have a koi in a small bowl they get big and if they are in a small area they will get sick and die b/c they can't grow right.

Betta fish can live in a fishbowl & with no filter. The males are extremely territorial, though & should be alone. Do not ever put males with males.
Fishbowls are inexpensive enough that if I were you, I'd go to the nearest Wal-Mart & "save" one of those little guys, & keep him in his own bowl.
You can buy 1.5 gal. fishbowls for about $6.00. This is more humane than the Bettas current "cup of a home" that you see in the stores.
Goldfish are messier, but you just need to change the water 3 times/ week, which is easy.

Shibumkins...not sure of spelling. It's really worth investing in a pump/filter. In England, you can pick up a combi for around £14, and really cuts down on the tank cleaning.

try a fighting fish.. but i'm not sure the scientific name.. beta, i think? i'm too sure if it gets along with the other fishes.. i keep alone in a much smaller tank (not a bowl) and has successfully mate the fishes to get the babies.. u should try it.. it's much more interesting than watching the fishes swim by, get a hands on experience! all the best..
