No-I think members of the new government will be assassinated and police will be killed.

I can't say if they will be ready to take over in 12-18 months. I am not in Iraq, nor am I training them. Those answers can only come from the Iraq security forces and their trainers. If I was to speculate, I'd say that in 12 - 18 months a good potion of Iraq will be under the control of the Iraq security force.

I just don't understand why they don't take this more seriously. British forces took over a fortress and the Iraqis just gave it back to the insurgents without a fight. They will not be ready unless we find a new president for Iraq.

There has been great strides in their forces and a 12-18 month time frame actually gives them room for error. Nothing miraculous about it.

We have to stand firm. We liberated you. Now YOU need to take charge of your country. We will SUPPORT you for the next year to year and a half--but YOU ARE in charge now. If they know we will stay forever-they will sit back and let our soldiers die for what is now THEIR cause. If I were an Iraqi citizen--why would I fight myself and risk dying when someone else will do it? But, if I knew it was either fight or die.....I'd fight! Time to get ready to cut the apron strings and let them do for themselves. Perhaps with a phased withdrawal, Iraqi civilians will take up arms against insurgents and rid Iraq of them once and for all!

No they will not be ready.
But I am still willing to bet coalition forces will be out of the country by then.
George is already now refusing to say that the US will "stay the course"

I hope they can, but fear any failures real or imagined will give Bush a "mandate" to stay there longer. At some point you just have to walk away.

They've been chomping at the bit to take over their country, but the unwanted guests have overstayed their welcomes.
