Em, you need to use detergent that takes out "protein" stains... if you know what I mean.

If you really mean glue, like from a hot glue gun, then stretch it over a hard surface (not the dining room table!) and scrape it off with a butter knife. Then use a stain pre-treatment generously (such as "Shout") and wash in warm.

I had also thought to use an iron on low, and brown bags to absorb the glue, however this might just succeed in sticking brown paper to the fabric, thus making the problem worse.

I'm guessing that this stain is after you pulled off the harden glue and to remove the rest, lay the area on a padded flat surface Ironing board or table padded with a towel on top of the towel put heavy paper as in a paper bag, lay down the linens and another paper bag then iron with a warm iron cotton setting the melted glue should come off on to the paper and out of the sheets.

I would suggest removing hot glue by putting a paper towel over it and running an iron over it. You may have to repeat a couple times but it is your best bet. It also works with wax.
Any remain reside you may be able to remove with a product like disolv-it.
