The iPod is a brand of portable media players designed and marketed by Apple Computer. Devices in the iPod family are designed around a central scroll wheel (except for the iPod shuffle, which uses click buttons) and the full-sized model stores media on an internal hard drive, while the smaller iPod nano and iPod shuffle use flash memory. Like many digital audio players, iPods can also serve as external data storage devices. Apple chose to focus its development on the iPod's simple user interface and its ease of use, rather than on technical capability.
As of 2006, the lineup consists of the 5th generation iPod that although primarily a music player both in use and capability, also plays videos; the smaller, second generation iPod nano; and the display-less iPod shuffle. These models were updated in 2006.
The iPod is currently the world's best-selling digital audio player and its worldwide mainstream adoption makes it one of the most popular consumer brands. Some of Apple's design choices and proprietary actions have, however, led to criticism and legal battles.
Oh, and it's Pronounced "iPod"

i-pod is the name for Apple Computer comapny's personal music player. Many other firms also make personal music players which accept mp3 files or .wav files. It is like having your own jukebox in your pocket. mp3 files for the little players are either downloaded from the internet or "ripped" from a CD and converted to mp3 files by your computer. Then you can "load" the music into your personal music player (and change it as often as you wish). The memory capacity of such players may be anywhere from 256 Mbytes to more than 4 Gbytes.

Primarily, an iPod is a media player, which means it plays music and media files that have been downloaded from a computer. iPods are like your own personal jukebox. You can download virtually your entire CD library into it (with the help of the accompanying computer program, iTunes) and create "playlists," which are lists of songs you can group together by category, mood, artist, etc. Or you can just put your iPod on "shuffle" and let it randomly select which music files to play from your library in random order. In addition to being able to convert your CDs to music files on iTunes, you can also purchase individual song downloads, which is quite handy if you only like one song on an album. You no longer have to be stuck buying the whole thing for just one or two songs! Some iPods can play video files as well as music, and some iPods can only play music files. iPod is just the most famous brand of media players, but there are a lot out there to choose from. iPods also have a built-in calendar, clock, and day planner, in some models. Recently, Apple released a supplementary part for your iPod that you can attach in order to get local FM radio stations on it too. I hope this helped.
