We recently had two trees cut down in the backyard: one cherry, one locust. Can I use this wood in our fireplace this year or do I need to wait for the wood to dry out? What would happen if I used the wood this year?

Let it dry well first. This will take at least 6 months, maybe longer. If you burn green wood, 2 things happen. First, it doesn't burn as hot, so you get less heat from it. Second, you get more creosote buildup in the chimney. Creosote is the stuff that burns when you have a chimney fire. This is a dangerous situation, and can burn your house down.

As others posted, you need to let the wood dry out. It's not safe for your chimney to burn green wood.

But as an added note, if you do any smoking of meats, cherry wood is a great one to have around. I've used it on chicken, pork, beef and fish and it adds a wonderful smokey sweetness to everything.

Sure. Green wood burns longer. Oak burns hottest. Green wood will release resins to coat your chimney. Dry wood does too to a lesser extent.

You can't burn it this year, you'll have to wait until next year. The wood will be way to wet this year.
