Are you also against fertility clinics? Couples who are unable to conceive go to fertility clinics to find out what the problem is. Oftentimes, the woman has ova removed to be fertilized in vitro, these embryos are then stored frozen in large quantities and some are reimplanted into the woman's uterus. If the in vitro fertilization was successful the rest of the stored embryos are oftentimes discarded. Are you opposed to this discarding of frozen embryos? If your answer is yes wouldn't it make sense to use the otherwise discarded embryos for stem cell research?

Thoughful answers only please.

I am pro-choice, but I just wanted to say that your point is very astute.....

I also wonder how they feel about birth control methods that don't prevent fertilization of the egg, but prevent it from attaching and surviving....after all..."life begins at conception."

I am against abortion. A fertilized egg is a different story. It is already in a frozen state and it would be better to use it for research than to throw it away. An abortion is the killing of a living, growing, person with a heartbeat. The mother doesn't even know that she is pregnant until after implantation has occurred. A fertilized egg is truly a few cells clustered together. No woman can know that she is pregnant at the early stage that embryo's are frozen in. No I am not against fertility clinics.

Tough moral dilemma. I oppose abortion in most cases, but do know there are sometimes when it is the best/only option. Using "discarded" zygotes (not quite embryos yet) for stem cell research isn't the real problem--as many times a fertilized egg does not implant in a woman's uterus and is naturally discarded anyway. However, the potential for abuse is tremendous. Will researchers be fertilizing someones eggs for the purpose of research (instead of using zygotes that were to be discarded)?

My sister is doing research with equine stem cells. From what she tells me using embryos will not be an issue in the near future. Also please note that there are BILLIONS (that is with a "B") in private funding available for stem cell research--and that is why I oppose using my tax dollars for this research. With all that private $ available--my tax dollars are better spent elsewhere.

No, I am not against discarding the frozen embryos. I personally think people should never get abortions, or if they are going to, to at least research ALL possible options first. If making abortion illegal happened, there would be a black market for such, and cause a lot of deaths. I just HATE (i rarely hate things) that people use abortion as a means of birth control

That's a tough question. I'm not even really sure I'm in favor of these sorts of procedures. It seems like if you can't have a child the old fasioned way, what's the matter with adopting a child instead? There are lots of children out there who need homes, and it is ultimately less expensive to adopt than to go through the trouble of those medical procedures. I know that money won't be the end-all reason for any of this, but it would be less selfish I would think. I know many families who have adopted kids, and they have all turned out great and the families are very happy.

This reminds me of an episode of "CSI" I once saw. The murder victim was a Christian woman who was a virgin who had given birth to a child, because she had become involved with a group devoted to finding women to carry abandoned frozen embryos to term. I assume that such groups actually exist, since often TV show plots have some basis in reality.

If the frozen embryos are a result of an abortion, yes! It's not research we are against...it's the murdering of humans while they are still in the womb.

Late term abortion is what people are outraged about.

Also, it should need the consent of the donors who make that decision.
