I want to treat him to something little....not too expensive. We've had a hard time lately and I just want to give him something to help cheer him up and show him I love him.

Have you thought about booking a hotel room for the night, it doesn't have to be expensive, a Travel In is fine. The two of you go out for a nice meal and then back to the hotel room for some nice cuddles and whatever else follows. I'm sure that will show him how much you love him and help to soften the hard times you have both had recently.
