I recently related to an answers forum that I was a decendent of Abe Lincoln, Hernan Cortez, and my grandfather fought with Pancho Villa. I am proud of that. I then recieved hatemail. I was called unAmerican.
My question is in response to what the hatemail stated.
If I am unAmerican, what kind of "American" would call Abe Lincoln, who was one of if not THE greatest man in American history a homosexual? And even if he was, (which it is clear at least in my history books, he was not) does that cheapen his contributions to our country, or lessen his accomplishments?
How can someone who claims to be a true "American" (mouthbreather77) actually make that statement and expect me to change the fact that I am proud to be related to him? What does it matter so much to him? Is it just Xenophobic, homophobic hate? Why should I not be proud of my heritage and history, regardless from whom and where I came from?
I would like educated answers only please.
Thank you.

This was another hatemail response I recently recieved he states...."You are WRONG. Lincoln was a homosexual. Why do you think the gay Republicans call themselves "Log Cabin Republicans"? Are you kidding? How do you not know this? Do a google search on Lincoln and you will learn this about your ancestor. You also called him a Founding Father which is WRONG. He was born in the 19th Century after the Revolution was fought and won and the Constitution was written and ratified."

I reminded him Abe Lincoln was a founding father of FREEDOM, and according to history, any American who made such a contribution is a founding father.
Is it just me or is mouthbreather77 a moron. Check his profile, it is full of uneducated racist questions, I think he fears Mexicans and anyone who is not a white christian.

The facts on Lincoln was that he was not homosexual however, bipolar, he had moments of great depression and moments of great clarity and creativity. Which according to a recenty study shows bipolar people to be 120% more creative than the norm. He was a great thinker and a great human, regardless if he may or may not have been gay.

Don't listen to the kooks. Abraham Lincoln was the greatest of American presidents. He led the country through a terrible time and never took his eyes off the prize: saving the Union. Sure, we can look at him today through our modern eyes and see his prejudices but he was out in front of public opinion in his time. Lincoln was a brilliant leader, who had compassion for the enemy and a firm hand for his own Army. He was probably also the best writer of all the presidents.

You should be very proud of your Lincoln ancestry. I suggest that you read a good book about Lincoln and learn more about him. I recommend Carl Sandberg's "Lincoln."

John McCain is an American hero whom we ALL can be proud of, regardless of our political beliefs. Abraham Lincoln is thought of now as a great President, but he was reviled and ridiculed by many Americans during his time in office, and he got by somehow despite bouts of serious mental depression which would undoubtedly prevent him from being elected today. History has been kind to him.

I do think Abraham Lincoln was a great American. It must be a very special feeling to know you are related to him.

There is speculation that Lincoln was a homosexual, but nothing whatsoever that I would call credible evidence.

There is right now no proof either way. But Abe Lincoln was a great American whether or not he was gay.

Yes! Abe Lincoln was a great American. He freed the slaves.

He is inspiring, cause' he had nothing to start with, and got where he got to by hard work.

I also like that he had psychic dreams. I mean that is interesting. It is almost like he was chosen to do what he did.

He wasn't afraid to admit to his inner thoughts or his feelings.

You got me. I think that the people who can people Un-American for being proud of there heritage or because they speak their mind and believe in the constitution. I'm called Un-American because I voice my opinion and exercise my constitutional Rights. If you ask me the ones that want to deny you the right to exercise your freedoms or deny your heritage are the true Un-Americans
