Even though the male sperm is lighter and therefore faster, why is there a 50 50 chance of concieving a boy and girl?

The "female" sperm live longer, and can penetrate the egg easier. If you have sex and the egg is not immediately ready, then there is little chance that the Y sperm will still be around when it is ready. A woman can "get pregnant" up to 24 hours after sex, but if it is that long a wait, the baby will almost invariably be a girl.

firstly, the odds are not 50-50, they're typically in favour of a boy, by a small margin, say 51-49.

probably based on superior speed (confirmed by experiment) alone, the male sperm would take the odds to 55 or even 60.

but then what happens is that its lifespan is shorter. Which is why the odds, over the extend of the fertile window, are only a bit over 50.

anyway all this then gets diluted away, because we men don't live as long, so in the overall population you've got a good deal more than 50 percent women.

a male can contribute either an X or a Y, since males have XY chromosomes. and females contribute XX, so only potential chance would be that the female contributes an X. in order for there to be a male child, the father has to donate the Y to bind to the ovum. so then there is 50% chance that the Y binds instead of the X of the male. If you dont understand what I am saying, then it might be a good idea to check out the crosses done by Charles Mendel (Punnet Square)....and that thoroughly explains the concept of donating and crossing over.

all female eggs have x chromosomes
sperm are either x or y chromosomes
xx is a girl which means a x sperm fertilized the egg and xy is a boy which means a y sperm fertilized the egg

It gets there first, but it does not have the punching power of the female sperm. They average out.
