i dont know about the best ever footballer because i didnt watch them play...i will only answer on what i have seen:
If you are talking about the best goalkeeper then nobody will mention other than 2 names Casillas and Buffon(no matter how much i hate him)in the midfield zizou will make it difficult for anyother player to be chosen although i admire Ronaldinho Gerrard and kaka's skills..When we talk about defense the world italy automatically pops into my mind.the entire structure of italia is based on defense..so they have the best defensive players so i will pick any italian: Cannavaro Zambrotta ir Gattuso
The Big issue is choosing the striker i will narrow my answer to top 5 : Eto'o Nistelrooy henry Raul and Messi
