I know what the foul lines are. They both run from home plate and are extended out past the 1st and 3rd bases to the outfield. This is not the line I'm talking about. When you watch a game, alongside the 1st base foul line, there is an additional white line that runs parallel with the foul line, but doesn't quite reach the first base plate.

It's the line that creates the "runner's box," which is the area in which a batter is supposed to run to first base. If he runs outside of that box, he can be called out.

There have been several occasions over the past few years where a pitcher/catcher has hit the runner with a ball when they're outside this box, and the umpire has called the runner out. The box is intended to keep the runner outside of the line, so that he isn't interfering with play.

That's the area that the runner has to saty in to run to first base. If he goes outside of that area he can be called out.

it's for added proof that the runner stayed in the basepath on the way to first when groundball plays are made from the area near the batters box.

It is supposed to be used for out of the base path calls.
