The same way as all rivers erode the land. Simple terms - the water rubs along the edge of the bank, pulling off small fragments and taking them away - eroding the banks. This is worse on the outside of bends, where the water is forced to change direction. Often on the insides of bends, the water is slow moving enough for the particles it carries to be deposited. This can slide the bend in a river sideways, giving the big loops in the tees from Yarm to the estuary. The water can also pick up the stones and rocks from the base of the river and carry them along, deepening the river, the rocks are dropped when the water speed slows - insides of bends or at the mouth of the river. This deepening can be seen in gorges and in waterfalls (where the water flows accross hard rock - hard to deepen, then meets softer ground that deepens, hard rock stays where it is at original level while after it river level falls and waterfall is created (see High Force for an example on the tees)) Water particles can become trapped in rocks near the river, when they freeze in the winter they expand and over years can crack the rocks and erode the edges like that.
