Because fear makes the citizens of a democracy do things that aren't necessarily in their best interest.

Witness George W. Bush using the fear of terrorism to scare the American people into giving him another disastrous term in office.

But World War II was the original cause of the Amendment. The people's fear (of Nazism and the failures of lassisez-faire capitalism in the Great Depression) led them to elect Franklin Roosevelt to 4 terms.

Roosevelt was a good leader, though.

President Bush is an historic American mistake.

The president has a lot of powers, not the least of which is nominating judges to the Supreme Court. After FDR was elected to 4 terms (though he didn't serve all 4) it was necessary to limit that kind of influence.

Thank God they did! They did this to prevent a monarchy. Plus with the new president comes changes to the House of Representatives, Congress, etc. I think it is an extremely smart idea! Imagine having an inept president for like 16 years?

Because 4 consecutive terms with a Democrat in office made it seem like a dynasty. We don't have, and don't need royalty here.
