He probably has swim bladder disorder. Are you feeding it a floating food? When they eat food from the surface it makes them suck in air which can get trapped and make they float. Switch to a sinking pellet, if that doesn't work fast it for a few days and feed a thawed frozen (has less salt then canned) pea. Just because he is floating doesn't mean that he will die soon and flushing him is a cruel way to kill something.

It will be a swim bladder problem. I am a veterinary nurse and one of the practice goldfish had this problem. one of the new vets gave it antibiotics and it fixed it for 2 weeks and then it started doing it again. the same treatment was given but it didnt work and we ended up putting it to sleep. :-(
usually the fish will die eventually when it cant get to food,

However i saw a program on animal planet where a lady in america attached a cork to the back of the goldfish using cotton and it worked!

It's most probably got a damaged balancing mechanism thing. All fish have this thing in their brains or body (not sure) which helps them to balance, however if this becomes damaged they lose the ability to swim the right way up. It's strange that he is swimming upside down. They usually end up smimming on their sides. How long has ur fish been like this? In the past when I have had fish who end up swimming on their sides I have just flushed them done the loo. I don't think they last much longer anyway!

its got a problem with its swim bladder (the bit that helps with floating etc) as far as i know there isnt much you can do for the problem. Ive known a fish go on for months with the condition but in the end he will start floating to the top of the tank, belly up and he will die.

It may have a swim bladder problem.
Try putting some liquid fish tonic in the water, it might help the fish to get better.

He's probably dead.... Put him in the toilet, flush, and then he'll swim in circles.
