I feel at a loss, wondered if anyone else has experienced this.
I dropped something on my big toe.
It ended up having a split down the middle of it. Then it fell off completely.
When it grew back it became an ingrown toe nail.

Podiatrist said it was a fungus (from a culture he did). He removed ingrown part.

I had a dermatologist look at it, he said it look like it was injured, not a fungus at all.

Shortly after it has fallen off again, and I can see a spit on the skin, where it was when I had a nail there.

I am upset wondering if my podiatrist knows what the hel* he is doing! He said a fungus- and clearly its screwed up through injury.
Will it heal, or keep coming back weird, ingrown, fall off ect.

I played sports for many years and damaged my toes and lost toe nails as well. My big toe took several attempts for it to regrow and now it has a hump in the middle everytime it regrows and its brittle. I lost my toe nail on another toe and it grew back just fine. I would get a second opinion if you are concerned about it anyways.

I had an ingrown toenail a number of years back (1993, I think). First my doctor removed a sliver of nail to get out the ingrown section. It was ingrown again within a couple of months. She decided I must have a spur, so she removed the entire toenail, and cut down in to the base of the toenail to remove the spur. She said I probably would never have a toenail on that toe because of the damage done to the base of the nail. She was wrong. I actually have two small toenails that grow in from each side and meet in the middle. I know, I'm a freak.

I know that's not exactly your situation, but I guess my point is, once you damage something underneath the nail, I think it's a done deal. My toenail has been this way for 13 years now, so I've pretty much given up. I would say the most important thing is to find someone who will get your toe healthy no matter what that takes.

Yeah, I did something like this...twice. First time I caught my little finger in the hinge of a door, one of those doors with the thingy that makes it close, and another time I pulled a drawer out over my big toe. (That doesn't sound bad, but it soooo was.) My little finger nail had a huge blood blister, which I had drilled by a Nurse to get the blood out, and then it eventually fell off and regrew, and turned out fine, and my big toe was split down the middle.. I still have the split down the middle on my toe (that was 3 years ago), but it seems to be OK. Apparently, when you have an ingrown toenail, its because its growing on the huh (skew), and it grows into the skin instead of straight. Just keep an eye on it, make sure you trim it regularly, but so that it doesn't look as if it will grow into the skin in the corners, (no sharp edges), and wait...I'm sure it'll be ok in time...it should heal.

This is one of the most painful injuries one can have. There are a wealth of sensory nerves in that area, and the circulation may be compromised, due to other factors in your life. You can also depend on a secondary infection virtually 100 percent of the time. All of these factors add up to a very painful and lengthy convalesence. How long is difficult to predict, form he information you have given, however, it would not be uncommon to be debelitated until the new nail grows back, if it does. That takes several weeks. Talk to your physicain, there are some long lasting NSAID analgesics that may make your life easier, Good luck.

Well, all i know that your big toe would heal super slow because it'll take time to regrow the nail, the skin, and harder to form together. eewww but good luck with that.

If the nail is malformed because of the injury, it will probably straighted itself out. I had a similar problem with a finger nail. If it is a fungus, then it will not clear up. I call it "rot toe". I have one one my right foot. My mother had it and my grandpa had it. I suppose its hereditary. There is medication for the fungus now a days, but its an expensive treatment.

It probably will heal...but it will take several regrowth attempts before it comes back normal again. Not much you can do but wait and see. When I was a kid I had a similar problem and it eventually straightened itself out.
Just takes time...lots of it.

Second opinion time.
Ask for a referral to another doctor.
If you don't trust what the doc says, try another doc.
All doctors are not made the same.
Some are better on some things, and others are better on other things.

It will heal but you have to give it time.
