get who ever you are going with to go shopping with you and get outfits to match each other - eg. the adams family or one could go as a murderer and the other as the victim.
groups in fancy dress look alot better the people turning up together as completely different things.

What you can do is dress up that hair a bit, make it fancy looking. Then, wear an amazing dress, by an awesome mask, and go as a guest to a masquerade ball! Its elegant, sexy, beautiful and far from slutty!

You don't want to look silly. Stick with something flowing and feminine. The goddess thing already mentioned, princess, medieval lady, 1930 or 40's vamp actress, etc. If you show up with rubber ears and a tail you could feel awkward. :)

Go to a local Thrift store and you can find gowns that were previously owned, mabye some shoes and an evening purse. Also a Boa scarf. and go as celebrity.
