Because most people who are locked up in the penal system are not very intelligent. Their simple minds can be twisted into whatever frame of thought their mentor desires. That's why race is such a big thing in prison. Most of those idiots don't even know that the Nation of Islam and the KKK have a solid relationship. They both want racial seperation, and they both line their pockets with stolen money. Either way you choose(KKKor Nation of Islam) you lay with the devil. Good luck on judgment day.

1. Get out of their cell.
2. Join a gang.
3. Look good at parole hearing.
4. Opiate of the masses
5. Get perks like a rug or a thick book to light on fire during a riot, etc.

Because Islam provides hope to the downtrodden. Most people in the correctional facilities are from the poorer sections of the society who have been exploited all their lives. In Christianity, you are asked to accept the status quo, and show your other cheek to the oppressor who slaps you. Islam asks you to fight for yourself and that is empowering.

My guess is that may of the tenets of Islam make these people feel more empowered and no longer losers. There is a real brotherhood among Muslims that cannot be found in Christianity

Becasue it is the only place where you are in solitude and have nothing to do but read and think. Imagine how many people react and never take thinking seriously. They think so hard with all that time to waste they finally get it and are able to make Peace with GOD.
