When we bought the house we got the central vacuum roughins to make it easier for when we purchased a central vac. We installed all the pipes now and I was going to do the wiring today and noticed that throughout the house the wiring for the central vac is TELEPHONE wire.

Do I need to change the wire? or can I just pick two colors and wire them up? Our central vac runs off of the normal plug for the vacuum head ... but I guess the wiring in the wall/roughin is to turn the vacuum on when the tube is inserted into the wall....

Anyone able to give me some feedback or insight would be much appreaciated.... Thank You

You should refer to the manual.

Yes, you are correct - this is for a low volatage relay - insert the metal hose connection, circuit is closed, central vac motor starts - this is not designed to carry the 120volt line voltage needed for power heads, etc.

Power heads would need a seperate 120v 15amp circuit run - many central vac companies make the hose outlet with a single 120v 15amp outlet in the same opening - run 14/2 w/ground nm-b (romex) to the outlet.

to stress again, the "telephone" wire is for the low voltage circuit ONLY.

Ive had central since 1963 called Filter Flo..still runs great .The motor brushes wore out after about 10 years and they said I would need a new motor I talked them into giving me the brushes and have been using it ever since..All you need is the bell wire or any 2 wires from a telephone wire..

I'm glad you ask that. I'm going to install one myself.
