Here is a different kind of an explosion. Buy a two liter bottle of club soda and put it in the refrigerator. Also pick up a pack of Mentos. Once the soda is nice and cold take it outside and place it on a level surface. Carefully unscrew the cap. Make a simple funnel out of paper and add 8-10 Menthos to the soda bottle. Jump back!

The CO2 is keep in solution because the sealed bottle is under pressure. The gas solubility in the soda is higher when the soda is cold but as we all know an open bottle of soda will go flat as the CO2 comes out of the soda. Adding the Menthos to the soda creates nucleation sites for the gas to form on and the gas comes out of solution very quickly. The Menthos act as a catalyst to speed up the rate and the gas comes out of the bottle and as it does it carries a lot of the soda along with it.

I recommend Club Soda rather than Coke to avoid a messy cleanup.
