I too was chronic sufferer of poor quality (dreamy and breaking type)sleep with insufficient hours till few years back.I even tried trinquilizers many times but that too didnt help. Finally I overcome the problem by practising Pranayams (Yoga) every day for about 40 mins.(by gradually increasing). It will definitely help you.Simultaneously you should also try to give up smoking, drinking if you are having these habits. In fact if you follow Yoga regularly the bad habits will automitically go away .Though I am not a Yoga expert but I have gained the quality sleep(sound, dreamless, almost freshening) which was far far away from me since many years. Thanks to Yoga.Take dinner early say by 8 .No tea, coffee or soft-drinks in evening.Go to bed every night by 10 or 10.30 by latest. While lying in bed straight(your back on bed) take about 10 deep breathes with little intervals and leave your body loose.I hope you will forget that once you had the sleep disorders. All the best

First write down anything that keep popping into your mind. That way you can forget for tonight & still remember tomorrow.
Take a warm shower/bath use Lavender body soap.
Put PJs on ,drink some warm tea.
Put on some soft music or ocean noise.
Apply a face mask to block out light, take 1 benadryl & 1 tylenol
Then goto sleep. Sweet dreams ZZZZ.
Ps don't take the meds if your allergic :)

i would say count sheep but that one doesnt even work for me! I usually turn off everything in the house except the sea music from wal mart. No lights! After im in the bed and wishing i was asleep i gently rock myself by moving my feet or legs. Its real comforting. Try it

do "pm" yoga...buy a tape.
do breathing exercises...you can get tapes for this, too.
learn to relax your BODY.
focus on your body and muscles not what's in your head.
do the same routine in the same order each night.
like brush teeth, turn out light, etc.
you will get conditioned that it's time to sleep.
mostly need to learn to meditate to relax.
try a mantra or ritual.
focus on your breathing, following your breath exactly in your body.
that way you can't think about stuff.
which keeps you awake.
also make sure you don't have any stimulants in you like coffee, caffeine, chocolate, guarana, red bull, etc. that will make it very hard.

Remember your bedtime prayers? I'm not saying you need to start up with 'now I lay me down to sleep...', but stop and focus on whatever higher Power you DO believe in. Bathe your mind in His Love, smile, and fall peacefully asleep.

I have to have some white noise and relatively dark and I pray. All of this usually puts me out like a light.

i have a cd of soft music that i play each night. its a compilation of my favourite acoustic songs, and the repitition of it has something to do with helping sleep patterns. Coz im a student, and a full time worker, i dont have much time for sleep, so when i do, i need to make it worth my while! Milk drinks help as well.
