Stop feeding the cats, & put smaller amounts of dog food in the dogs dish. The cats will get hungry & go after the vermine (seriously) & the dog food won't be lying around to attract the mice & rats either. Put all other food that the mice & rats might break into like cereal boxes, bags of sugar etc in plastic RubberMaid containers, so they can't get at the food, & ruin it for your consumption.
Clean all areas where food is prepared & eaten.
Their dropping are toxic to humans, so take precautions when cleaning them up, but clean them you must. Those droppings & other scents that they leave behind are like road signs to other mice & rats, to come on in. Strong smells of cleaners, & sanitizers actually discourage them, so keep cleaning regularly. Forbid family members from eating ANY food in any areas of the house outside of the kitchen & dinningroom. The rats & mice are attracted to our food, so the smaller the area that they are attracted to, the easier it is to control them. Kids eating a candy bar in their room, will attract mice right to themselves. Tell your family that, & they'll stop taking food into their rooms, & start keeping them cleaner too.
Set baited "Snap Traps" inside kitchen cabinets, & behind appliances & furniture where your pets aren't likely to get at them.
Rats need the larger Rat Traps to get them. The traps are cheap compared to the cost of an exterminator. You can re-use them if you have the stomache for it, but it is healthier just to throw mouse & trap directly into the garbage & get new traps as necessary.
If you find any of the holes where the little buggers are getting in, you can plug them up with steel wool. Look for gaps in the walls around wiring, & plumbing. You would be amazed at what they can get themselves through, so plug up ANY gap that you see.

Make sure all forms of food are non accessable to them. Before you go to bed all pet food, water, snacks have to be put away and sealed tightly. If there is no food source for the rodents, they will leave.
If you have the money, tent your home for fumigation. It will kill everything immediately. Or, hire an exterminator and leave with your animals for a couple of days. You could use glue traps if you can deal with that concept.

Buy BIG cats or borrow some from your friends and family. As long as you don't feed them (but leave them plenty of water) They will take care of your rodent infestation. It worked for me! Also, find out where they are coming in from and fill the holes with steel wool. They can't chew through the steel wool, but as they gnaw on it small pieces of metal will get into their stomachs and kill them. This way they will also be eliminated from outside your house as well. Good Luck!

I just bought a mouse bait box from a local store that stores the bait just so the mouse can get it and not pets or children. It works great and there is no mess. It is made by Decon.

I can't believe your cats haven't run them off already! Anything else has a potential danger to your small pets. Maybe you need a bit more aggressive cat.
