Nirvana, hands down. They literally overthrew the King of Pop, with their first album. They were the reason that hair bands like Poison, Warrant, and all the rest fell off the face of the map. They showed the kids who weren't popular that they could express themselves in music and be loved by all. They were really the one band that changed music at its time. ( Obviously other than the Beatles, which transformed music as a whole).
Honestly Led Zeppelin didn't really do anything new, there were dozens of bands like them in the UK and America, they just happened to be the one that everyone jumped onto. Robert Plant's screaming wasn't really groundbreaking, Jiimmy Page though was an absolutely amazing guitarist

Guess first would have to be Pink Floyd. Created some epic pieces of music in the 70's that sound just as fresh today. I would also have to go for Rush, or as I call them, the poor mans Led Zep. I just love 2112 and Hemispheres by Rush, two great rock albums. Also, maybe more jazz rock, but when the Mahavisnu Orchestra rock out theres no one who can touch them!

Although you've probably never heard of them, the band "Cacophony" is spectacular - it had two world class guitarists in it, Marty Friedman and Jason Becker. Unfortunately, Jason Becker, was diagnosed with ALS, but he is still writing music with the assistance of technology. He recently wrote a ballet. There are a lot of better known bands, but this particular band was incredible.

I believe the best rock group in the World is John Bull of Bridlington, and the reason is because they make the finest rock in the World. Their humbugs are also very good too.

ok, this depends on what genre of rock, just rock. i'd have say either presly or the beatle's. they where the real pioneers of the genre, and without them, you wouldn't have the style of rock we have now. if you mean more of the harder heavier rock. i'd go to the prog metal with queenryche or dream theater or even symphany x. in heavy metal, pantra, zepplin, iron madien. into the bay area thrash metal, of course metallica. prog rock, would be pink floyd, yes, and king crimson. overall, dream theater, because they are a modern pioneers. melding metal and prog rock into one. and they do a very good job at it. that and john myung can't be touched on the bass. you asked for my honest opinon

I agree, Led Zeppelin. They started it all, and their music holds up over time. I'm listening to "Black Dog" as I'm typing this answer!

Pink Floyd. They just musically hit the spot for me. Their lyrics are amazing along with their ability to make wonderful music. I love how Gilmour playes the guitar. I could listen to him all day. I agree with Zepplin too. Rock on.
