I think I have a trojan virus. What software can I use to get rid of it?

I tried everything I have already installed on my computer, which is McAfee, and I'm still getting a message that reads, "Your computer is infected. Windows has detected a spyware infection".

Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Spyware isn't a virus. It's a different thing.

Download Adaware (it's free) and see if it can 'find and destroy' it.

If your computer says that you have "spyware", then you don't have a trojan virus. Spyware is adware that tracks or steals your every move on your pc.

I use an excellent free program that is state of the art technology and will remove the really hard spyware that others either miss or are unable to remove.

http://www.superantispyware.com Download their free home personal use version an install. There purchased upgrade will only give you a background guard and automatic updates. Before you run the program, update all of the core signatures.

This program scan all 175,000 objects in my system including all of my favorites. If there is a nasty spyware in your system this program will find it and destroy.

Superantispyware just came out with a new version last week. And this is the only time that you will get an automatic updates of any new versions. As for signature updates you perform the on a manual basis.

Important that after the spyware is found and destroyed that you reboot your system .

Sincerely hope this helps you.

The program causing that message IS malware. It is a "hijacker" brought in by a trojan downloader. McAfee and Norton often fail to detect or stop these programs from getting on your pc. One of the worst of these programs is called Spy Sheriff, which is actually spyware that does exactly what you describe.

spybot search and destroy is a great freeware program for getting rid of these problem programs, and also if you install and keep its Tea Timer feature on, tea timer will keep such things from trying to sneak into your pc again.

Kaspersky antivirus and AVG Free both do a better job than Norton or McAfee, in my experience.

If you get an "access denied" error message when trying to get rid of the malware, then download a free program called Unlocker,

which you can use to delete the malware files.

I would check your add/remove programs for any sorta "Game packs" or "spyware software" installed.. . then to remove it it might be tricker than just "removing" from the add/remove programs in settings panel.

use the software uninstalling util if it has one, if not remove from the settings panel, then run LAVASOFT ADWARE PERSONAL (It's a free download). Restart..

Still there ? ... turn your virtual memory off in windows, restart, run adware and any 2 virus programs you have.. enable virtual mem and resart...

Still there.. .I have no other options then to back up the things you need and want to keep and reinstall windows.. =(

If you are sure you actually have a virus I'd recommend using PandaActiveScan online (it's free) at - http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/ActiveScan.htm

Otherwise download AdAware http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html
and Spybot - Search & Destroy http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10122137.html
There are also two free downloads from Microsoft -
