there is a green square in a green square on the bottom of my screen next to the clock. When i roll my mouse over it nothing happens, like other icons tell you what they are. I'm too scared to open it as I've had so much trouble with stuff I don't want and can't get rid of.

It is the task manager. You can maximize it and then close it.

-------
NEW

SIS (Silicon Integrated Systems) makes motherboards and computer chips. Have you visited their web site? They have an option to install a program which identifies your motherboard for you if you want to download drivers and don't know which motherboard you have. Maybe that's the program.
Whatever that program is, it's something for your motherboard.

I don't know what it is. That area beside the clock where all the little icons go is called the System Tray. System tray programs are programs which sit in the background. The icons are there to display information for a program or to act as a quick method of accessing options for a program.
Since the program is already running, try right-clicking it first, then try double clicking it.

Hi, you didn't really give much information with this..

Send me an email and I'll try and help you identify it...

If it's next to your clock (or commonly known as the System Tray) then it means it's already running, so it should be safe to open it...if you're still concerned, right-click on it see if there's anything you recognise about the options.

If not, just send me an email, lol.

The only green square by the clock would be the task manager...but it should only be open if you pressed CTRL-ALT-DEL and clicked task manager. That's the only green square in Windows i can think of.

Right click the icon, and often it will tell you what it is, or have a message displaying "about". If you dont want it there, right click it and then left click "exit", or "close"
