I brought my British (240volts)Dyson vacuum cleaner over here to Canada (110 volts) and I need the correct power converter to make it work. My laptop, camera and mobile phone all plug straight into the mains, so I can keep in touch. My hi-fi already has a power converter so music is no problem. However, my carpet is lacking in care (except for the daily brushing with an electric Bex Bissell thing which only takes the dust off the surface). This is my last desperate attempt to get my Dyson working before I have to go and buy a new one. Please help!

The first thing to do is to ignore sue! it wont work on half the voltage! You need a 120/240 volt step up transformer of at least 1200watts depending on your Dyson model. This would be quite heavy, large and expensive. It would also draw at least 10-12 amps from the outlet, I'm not sure if you will get that much current on a Canadian domestic outlet! Why not buy a Canadian model ready to go, or replace the motor with a 120 volt version from Dyson?

Contact Dyson. You are going from one voltage to another and there's a hertz change as well. Some appliances have an internal switch that says 120/240.......I don't know about vacuums. Best contact Dyson.

You probably should just invest in a new one anyway. Those power converters are not meant for the long term, and it just increases the possibility of things catching fire should something bad happen.

Maybe you could sell off the old one on ebay to help you recuperate costs for a newer north american specific voltage vaccuum.

Get a plug adapter, just plug the adapter into the socket and then plug in your Dyson.

If its not too hard install some 240 volt receptacles. If you can run wires in the walls. I did it for a 220 volt cloths iron for my wife. You do have 220 volts in the receptacles on your kitchen counter. Please consult a professional and they could install a 220 volt receptacle for you in one of the boxes in the kitchen.
